Value creation in Prince Edward Island

PEI owners work with us by video call and in person. On the Island, concentration and owner dependence are usually the drivers that matter most, and recent rebate closures show why program-tied revenue needs watching.

On Prince Edward Island, the eight value drivers are the same as anywhere else, but two of them usually carry extra weight. In a small market, a few customers, referral sources or programs can account for much of a company's revenue, so concentration is often the first driver to measure. And because business relationships on the Island are personal, owner dependence tends to be high: customers know the owner, call the owner and trust the owner. A value-creation plan for a PEI company is often about turning that personal goodwill into goodwill that belongs to the company.

We work with owners in Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Cornwall and across the Island, in person and by video call, as well as by phone, text and email.

HST and pricing

PEI companies charge 15% HST, and our fees carry the same, as set out on our pricing page. With a rate that high, quoting tax-inclusive prices without tracking the pre-tax margin can hide real erosion. Review prices against costs at least once a year, and track gross margin monthly on a basis your accountant has confirmed.

Records and licences held by people

The Island's licensing rules are specific. Plumbing companies need a Plumbing Contractor's Licence, boiler and pressure vessel work needs a Mechanical Contractor Licence on a three-year cycle ending 31 December 2027, and people who service propane appliances need an LP Gas Personnel Licence. For value, ask whose name each licence depends on, and when it renews. Our owner-dependency audit includes credential dependence for this reason. Confirm specifics with the province.

Seasonality

The Island gets real snow and cold, though the Gulf of St. Lawrence takes the edge off, and many local companies earn a large share of the year in the summer months. Seasonal companies should plan cash across the whole year, set a minimum cash target against their slowest months, and track receivable days monthly on a value dashboard.

When programs close

PEI offers a sharp example of program-tied revenue. According to the province, as of October 2026, the efficiencyPEI residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 15 April 2026, though purchases made in the preceding year may still qualify within one year of purchase, and the efficiencyPEI free heat pump program states that applications are closed. Details are on the province's funding and rebates page. Confirm current terms with the province.

For a home-service company that relied on those programs, a share of demand disappeared with them. That is concentration in its plainest form. The value-creation response is to measure program-dependent revenue and build demand, including recurring agreements, that does not rely on any one program. Our recurring revenue guide is a good starting point.

Where Island plans usually start

The first 100 days for a PEI company often look like this:

  1. Customer introductions. Choose the ten customers who know only the owner, and plan who will become their main contact, with joint visits first.
  2. A year-round cash plan. Build the summer surplus deliberately and set a minimum balance for the winter.
  3. A licence renewal calendar. List every licence, who holds it and when it renews, with a named person responsible.

Each step reduces risk that a lender, partner or buyer would otherwise notice.

How an engagement runs for PEI owners

Interviews and monthly check-ins run well by video call, with in-person sessions where they help. Island companies are often smaller, so the assessment may be shorter, but the management depth work can take longer because there are fewer people to build a second layer from. When you are ready, a call or text to (604) 632-4959, or an email to Ali@Sedighi.ca, is all it takes. The first 30 minutes are free. Other Atlantic provinces are on the areas page.

Frequently asked questions

What tax applies to your fees in PEI?

15% HST, shown separately on your proposal and invoices.

Everyone knows everyone on the Island. Is that a strength or a weakness for value?

Both. Reputation travels fast, which helps a well-run company. But relationships often sit with the owner personally, which raises owner dependence. The plan should turn personal goodwill into company goodwill by introducing managers to key customers over time.

Do you work with PEI owners in person?

We meet owners in person and online by video call, and also work by phone, text and email.
