For British Columbia owners, value creation follows the same method as anywhere in Canada: score the eight value drivers, plan two to five years of work, and prove the improvement month by month. What is specific to BC is the tax your prices carry, a provincial privacy law of its own, the public bodies that hold records about your company, and a climate that changes seasonal cash patterns depending on where in the province you operate.
ValueCreation.ca is based in Vancouver, so we meet many BC owners in person, as well as by video call, phone, text and email.
Sales tax and your pricing
Our fees for BC clients carry 5% GST, with provincial sales tax added only where it applies to the service, as listed on our pricing page. Whether PST affects what you sell is a question for your accountant.
For value creation, the tax point to watch is pricing discipline. When owners quote "all in" without separating tax, margins erode quietly as costs rise. Price list reviews, part of our margin and EBITDA work, should always start from pre-tax figures your accountant has confirmed.
Records an outside reader will look at
Anyone assessing a BC company closely, whether a lender, a partner or eventually a buyer, will expect the public and official records to be current. Three bodies come up most often:
- BC Registries and Online Services holds company and business-name records. Annual reports filed on time and a tidy record of directors and officers are basic evidence of a well-run company.
- WorkSafeBC is the province's workers' compensation board. A clean account in good standing is a simple indicator of operational discipline.
- Technical Safety BC licenses gas and electrical contractors and oversees boilers, pressure vessels, refrigeration and other regulated equipment. For trades companies, how those licences are held, and by whom, is a direct owner-dependency question.
We do not give compliance advice. Our point is narrower: each of these records should be on your value-creation checklist, owned by someone other than you.
Privacy and customer data
BC is one of three provinces, with Alberta and Quebec, whose private-sector privacy law is treated as substantially similar to the federal PIPEDA, according to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. If a customer list or agreement base is one of your most valuable assets, how it was collected and is kept matters. A BC lawyer can tell you what applies.
Seasonality: coast and Interior
BC's climate is not one climate. Rain rather than snow defines winter in Vancouver and Victoria, while Interior and northern communities face a far colder and longer cold season. For seasonal businesses, that means two companies in the same industry can have quite different cash cycles depending on where they operate.
In a value-creation plan, this shows up in cash conversion: set a minimum cash balance that covers your own seasonal low, not a provincial average, and plan deposits and progress billing around your actual busy months.
Program-tied revenue
For BC home-service and trades companies, some demand is shaped by programs such as the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program. Its requirements changed for invoices dated on or after 6 July 2026: some rebates were removed and eligibility for certain upgrades was narrowed, according to Better Homes BC, as of October 2026. Confirm current terms with the administrator.
The value lesson is about concentration. If a large share of your jobs depends on one program, a rule change can move your revenue overnight. Track that share on your dashboard, and treat reducing it as a value-creation initiative.
How an engagement runs for BC owners
Owners in Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond and nearby cities often prefer in-person workshops for the assessment and the quarterly reviews, with monthly check-ins by video call. Owners in Kelowna, Abbotsford and the North usually mix video calls with occasional in-person sessions. Either way, the rhythm is the same.
When you are ready, a call or text to (604) 632-4959, or an email to Ali@Sedighi.ca, is all it takes. The first 30-minute consultation is free. See the areas page for other provinces.
Frequently asked questions
Can we meet in person in the Lower Mainland?
Yes. We are based in Vancouver and meet owners in person, as well as online by video call. Many BC engagements mix the two.
What sales tax applies to your fees in BC?
Our fees carry 5% GST, and provincial sales tax is added only where it applies to the service. Your proposal states the tax treatment, and your accountant can confirm how it affects your books.
Does BC's privacy law affect the value of my customer data?
It can. BC has its own private-sector privacy law, and customer records collected without proper consent or care are harder for a new owner to rely on. Ask a BC lawyer how it applies to your company.
