For Alberta owners, the work of building enterprise value is the same as anywhere: measure the eight drivers, plan the next two to five years, and prove the change with monthly numbers. Four Alberta specifics shape how that plan is written: 5% GST, a provincial private-sector privacy law, licensing rules that can tie a company's ability to trade to particular people, and a long, cold heating season that drives seasonal cash patterns for many service businesses.
We work with owners in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Lethbridge and across the province, in person and by video call, phone, text and email.
Tax and the price list
Our fees carry 5% GST for Alberta clients, as set out on our pricing page. For your own pricing, the useful discipline is to review prices against costs every year, separately from tax, and to track gross margin by service line monthly. In a province where many companies grew quickly in strong years, price lists and overhead are often the first places margin has slipped. Our margin and EBITDA guide explains where to look.
Records and licences an outside reader checks
- Corporate Registry. Alberta business names and corporations are registered through authorized registry agents, with guidance on Alberta.ca. Current filings and a clean record of directors are the basics.
- WCB-Alberta. An account in good standing with the province's workers' compensation board is simple evidence of operational discipline.
- Prepaid contractor licences. Under Alberta's Consumer Protection Act, businesses that take payment before work is finished and sell away from their usual place of business need a prepaid contractor licence and must post security, as described in the provincial publication. If your business model relies on deposits, it is worth knowing whether this applies to you; ask an Alberta lawyer.
Licences held by people
In Alberta's compulsory-certification trades, people doing the work must be journeypersons or registered apprentices, and electrical permits are issued only to certified master electricians, according to Tradesecrets Alberta. For trades companies, a permit or certification that only the owner holds is credential dependence in its plainest form. The fix is a second qualified person, planned well ahead, and our owner-dependency audit shows how to find these gaps. Check the specifics with the regulator.
Privacy
Alberta is one of three provinces whose private-sector privacy law is treated as substantially similar to PIPEDA, according to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. If your customer base is a core asset, how its data is held is part of its value.
Seasonality and cash
Alberta has cold continental winters and a long heating season, and Chinook winds can bring sudden mid-winter warm spells to the south of the province. For seasonal businesses, that means demand can spike and drop quickly within a single month.
In value terms, this is a cash conversion question. Set a minimum cash balance that covers your low season, take deposits where appropriate and lawful, and track receivable days monthly on a value dashboard.
Programs and concentration
For home-service companies, Alberta's program landscape is thinner than some provinces'. Alberta Municipalities runs the Clean Energy Improvement Program, which lets owners repay energy upgrades through their property tax, yet only where the local council has signed on. Our October 2026 review of official Alberta sources turned up no province-wide home heating rebate, and the federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program took its last Alberta applications on 31 July 2026. Confirm current terms with each administrator.
The value lesson: revenue that depends on a financing or rebate program in only some municipalities is concentrated revenue. Measure it, and plan to broaden demand.
How an engagement runs for Alberta owners
The assessment interviews and working sessions run well by video call, with in-person meetings where they add value, such as the plan workshop and the year-end review. Monthly check-ins and quarterly re-scores keep the value-creation plan moving. When you are ready, a call or text to (604) 632-4959, or an email to Ali@Sedighi.ca, is all it takes. The first 30 minutes are free. Other regions are on the areas page.
Frequently asked questions
What sales tax applies to your fees for an Alberta company?
5% GST. Prices are in Canadian dollars, and the tax is shown separately on your proposal and invoices.
Do you meet owners in Calgary and Edmonton?
Yes. We meet owners in person and online by video call. Many Alberta engagements run monthly by video with in-person sessions for the assessment and key reviews.
Are there Alberta programs that affect demand for my services?
For some home-service and energy-upgrade businesses, yes, such as the Clean Energy Improvement Program in participating municipalities. Official Alberta sources showed no province-wide home heating rebate when we checked in October 2026. Confirm current details with the administrators.
