For Ontario owners, the value-creation method is the same as everywhere in Canada: score the eight drivers, plan the next two to five years, and prove the change with monthly numbers. The Ontario context adds 13% HST, a set of provincial bodies whose records any careful reader will check, licensing regimes that can tie a trades company's value to a few individuals, and provincial programs that shape demand for some home-service businesses.
We work with owners in Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London and across the province, in person and by video call, as well as by phone, text and email.
HST and the margin conversation
Ontario companies charge 13% HST, and our fees carry the same, as shown on our pricing page. For value creation, the useful point is to keep tax entirely out of margin analysis. Price lists, discounts and gross margin should all be reviewed on a pre-tax basis your accountant has confirmed. In larger Ontario markets, price competition is intense, which makes unmanaged discounting one of the most common margin leaks we see. Our margin and EBITDA guide shows how to measure it.
Records an outside reader will check
- Ontario Business Registry holds corporate and business-name records. Current annual returns and accurate director information are basics.
- WSIB is Ontario's workplace safety and insurance board. An account in good standing is simple evidence of operational discipline.
Licensing and credential dependence
For trades companies, Ontario's licensing rules are central to value. Only TSSA-registered fuels contractors may carry out fuels-related work, using certified gas technicians, and electrical work for others requires an ESA Licensed Electrical Contractor, according to TSSA and ESA. Builders and sellers of new homes answer to a separate licensing body, the Home Construction Regulatory Authority.
The value question is who holds what. If the company's registration or licence depends on the owner, or on a single certified employee, that is a key-person risk any careful reader will see. Confirm the requirements with the regulator, then make a second qualified person part of your owner dependency and management depth plan.
Seasonality
Ontario's weather splits the province in two for planning purposes: the Great Lakes soften winter in the south, while the north faces a longer and harsher one. A company with operations in both will see different seasonal patterns by location. In a value-creation plan, that means setting cash targets and staffing plans by region rather than for the whole company, and watching receivable days through the busy months.
Programs and demand
For home-service and energy-upgrade companies, the Home Renovation Savings Program, run by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with Ontario government support, offers rebates on a range of upgrades, including cold-climate air source heat pumps up to $7,500, according to Save on Energy, as of October 2026. Ontario had no federal Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement as of 22 October 2026. Confirm current terms with the administrators.
From a value perspective, the question is not whether to work with programs but how dependent you are on them. Track the share of revenue tied to any single program on your monthly value dashboard, and treat a high share as concentration to be reduced over time.
Where Ontario plans usually start
In competitive Ontario markets, the first 100 days often concentrate on discount rules, gross margin by service line and a decision-rights table that frees the owner from routine approvals.
How an engagement runs for Ontario owners
Most of the work runs well by video call: interviews, working sessions, monthly check-ins and quarterly re-scores. In-person sessions are useful for the plan workshop and for introducing managers to new roles. Larger Ontario companies with several locations often need a slightly longer assessment, because margins and dependencies differ by site.
When you are ready, a call or text to (604) 632-4959, or an email to Ali@Sedighi.ca, is all it takes. The first 30-minute consultation is free. Other provinces are on the areas page.
Frequently asked questions
What tax applies to your fees for an Ontario company?
13% HST. Prices are in Canadian dollars and the HST is shown separately on your proposal and invoices.
Do you meet Ontario owners in person?
Yes. We meet owners in person and online by video call, and also work by phone, text and email. Many Ontario engagements run mostly by video, with in-person sessions for key workshops.
Is an ESA or TSSA licence part of my company's value?
For a trades company, the ability to keep working legally is fundamental to value, so how those licences and certifications are held matters. Check the requirements directly with ESA or TSSA, and plan so the company does not depend on one person's credential.
